Eating Healthy on a Budget
You’ve heard it before, eating healthy is expensive. FALSE! Don’t worry, if you’re on a budget, you don’t need to turn to the Dollar Meal at the nearest fast food joint.
In steps the Environmental Working Group (EWG), which recently partnered with the anti-hunger group Share Our Strength to create “Good Food on a Tight Budget,” a healthy shopping list for low-income households.
The EWG reviewed government surveys and tests for nearly 1,200 foods, looking at prices, nutrients, pesticides, environmental pollutants and artificial ingredients and picked the top 100 or so foods that ranked best.
They also offer a few tips before you begin your shopping trip, such as:
- Make a list
- Add more fruits, veggies, beans and lentils to your meal plan
- Skip processed foods
- Cook and freeze large batches
