Stick to the Routine to Keep Weight Off

If you’ve lost weight, you’re more likely to keep it off by sticking to your new dietary habits, says a recent study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. In other words, dieting may help you in the short term, but long term, you’ll need to develop some healthy habits.

In the study, researchers surveyed two sets of predominately African American women who had lost more than 10 % of their body weight in the past 2 years. One group had regained at least 33% of the weight they lost, while the other group had only gained 15% or less back.

Those who managed to keep the weight off  ”more often continued strategies used during weight loss, weighed themselves regularly, and used productive problem-solving skills and positive self-talk.” In other words, they continued to make consciously healthy choices. The group labeled as “regainers” on the other hand experienced difficulty continuing food and exercise behaviors and decreased their accountability.

A.K.A. Once you reach your weight-loss goal, you don’t want to fall into the trap of thinking — OK, now I can go back to eating whatever I want and skip the gym.” You’re more likely to gain the weight back. Instead, strive to make healthy eating and working out a lifestyle! Your body will thank you for it.
